🍇 TDWG WINE REVIEW 🍇

MARQUES DE BORBA Vinhas Velhas 2019 Alentejo DOC

This wine comes from 'Vinhas Velhas' = old vines, in fact more than 35 year old vines. Joao Portugal Ramos is extremely emblematic of the wines produced.

Despite the very hot summers, it does where based in Estremoz benefits from cool nights which contributes to the polyphenols.

GRAPE VARIETALS: Alicante Bouschet, Aragonez, Syrah and Castelao.

The grapes are hand harvested and interestingly are also foot trodden for 4-5 days in marble lagares - i know where to go to have some fun, if they will have me? @marquesdeborba

Aged in American and French oak barrels for 12 months.

The soil type is limestone and schist based and as I opened the bottle and poured a glass - there is an intensity to the garnet colour inside 🍷

On the nose, an intensity is portrayed too, carrying a distinct black fruit profile - think black cherries 🍒 , blackcurrants as well as a touch of charred wood for me.

On the palate, this comes to life in the mouth, fully fermented to dry. A wave of black cherry, blackcurrant, blackberry and eucalyptus notes to the fore with more than touch of spice and chocolate. This very well balanced wine is smooth, yet dense and continues to develop into a long finish. Mouthfeel - wow.

You can leave this to further develop with ageing, there is certainly secondary and tertiary elements to this wine, the oak has been wonderfully used to age and this 2019 (if i had any left), could be left in the cellar for a few years easily.

Cost per bottle: Roughly £15.

TDWG Rating: 91/100

Overall thought: Definitely worth a purchase!
